Building Automation Takes Off
Energy efficiency needs drive building automation to new heights, especially for lighting.

Often, building automation is thought of as a technology for mega high rises or homes for the wealthy. While that belief is correct, the fact is building automation is for any application, whether it's a retail store, restaurant, warehouse, office building or residential home — for the wealthy or for the average folk.

Building automation has come a long way and with the need for greater energy efficiency, building automation is a no brainer. Of course, building automation can encompass a variety of systems, from controlling and monitoring a structure's hvac system to lighting controls.

"The challenge always has been in getting people to adopt the technology," says Graham Martin, CEO of the Enocean Alliance. "Adoption of any technology is usually slow, but the pace is picking up for building automation systems."

Building automation systems are becoming more accessible to a variety of structures and energy efficiency is the driver for the installation of more building automation systems, especially in regard to lighting.

"Because of advancements and simplification in the technology, building automation systems are more universal today," Martin contends. "And, more people are realizing that building automation applies to them and they see it as a selling point for their property."

In fact, more building tenants see "green" buildings as a way for them to do business. Tenants want to be able to say they reside in a "green" building. Building automation systems go a long way to making that building "green."

Lighting, lighting, lighting

Building automation has been a staple for hvac systems for several years, but as more building owners and managers focus on lighting costs, they also are focusing on systems that control lighting.
